Tour du Faso
BY WILM HUYGEN
It’s Culture Clash in a sporty way! 1987 the Tour du Faso first took place in Burkina Faso. Up until now it is Africa’s biggest cycling race. Within ten stages, cyclists from Africa and Europa are crossing the sandy desert in an existing race.
Amid the clash of European perfectionism and African realities we follow European hobby adventurers and African local heroes in their passionate fight for making their dreams come true. Yet, our film does not focus on the question of who will win – instead, it pays particular attention on the value of the protagonists’ experiences.
The race has still retained its original and very African character as a “flawed” – but much more sympathetic – copy of the Tour de France, its European model. Some parts of the course are mere sand tracks, the advertising “caravan” consists of a single car and the cyclists are camping in the savanna during the race.
TOUR DU FASO takes the audience on a time travel back to pre-commercialised decades. Following the Tour du Faso, we will get to know more about cycling, Africa and the extraordinary fighting spirit of the underdogs. Here it is still the taking part that counts…
